Workers in a Changing World
The current unofficial ‘boycott’ of US tourism and goods is part of a transition that benefits Canadian workers in some ways. Many of our industries are diversifying export markets. The federal government is investing in infrastructure to support that—which means investments in ports, airports, and intermodal transportation corridors. An increase in domestic tourism also may enhance job security for some UCTE members.
At the same time, unions are concerned about public service cuts and discussions about privatization and labour law reform that could weaken the services Canadians rely on and the protections workers need.
Workers Make Canada Strong
What makes Canada strong is still the workers who provide public services, create wealth, and enable other Canadians to prosper. Protecting each other takes more than strengthening security and defence capabilities. It also means protecting public services, workers’ rights, and the social infrastructure Canadians depend on.
To members who are approaching summer vacation, we wish you a well-earned rest and time with loved ones.
Other UCTE members are entering a very busy time of year providing services to travellers on canals, at ports and airports. To these members, thank you for everything you do to keep Canadians safe and able to enjoy our beautiful country.
Today, we should show gratitude for all the workers who make Canada a great place to live. At the same time, there is always more we can do to build a Canada that is fairer, stronger, and more inclusive for everyone.

This may be a time of global crisis and conflict, but as some have said recently, Canada has potential to play a significant role in an uncertain world.
