Welcome Kit

This guide is to help you learn about your union:

Welcome to the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees (UCTE)

Whether you are a first time union member or have experience in the labour movement, we are here to help you in your workplace.

UCTE represents thousands of people who help drive economies while protecting everyday Canadians. Our members work at places like Transport Canada, Natural Resources Canada, ports and pilotage authorities, Canada Space Agency, Canadian Coast Guard and most federally-regulated airports.

We are safety inspectors for all modes of transportation and pilotage dispatchers. We are administrative personnel, airport firefighters and search and rescue specialists. As you can see, there is a huge diversity among our members. However, we all have one thing in common – keeping Canadians safe.

You are! UCTE is one of 15 member unions called components within the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC). PSAC is an umbrella organization that is the bargaining agent for over 200,000 workers across Canada – including UCTE members.

Together we are working to defend the rights of workers and improve the standards of the work world.

Your UCTE local is your first point of contact for any concerns you may have about your workplace. Your local is made up of volunteers from amongst your co-workers who are willing to help you and who themselves are supported by the regional vice-presidents.

PSAC provides training and resources that can help you with:

  • health and safety concerns
  • understanding your collective agreement
  • workplace harassment problems
  • equity issues
  • filing grievances
    and much more

PSAC is your bargaining agent. They are at the bargaining table to negotiate in your best interest.

PSAC uses its expertise on a national level to tackle issues like improved pensions, pay equity, working conditions and job security. For more
information about PSAC, visit their website at psacunion.ca

You are now part of a bargaining unit which has a collective agreement. A collective agreement is a contract between your employer and your union that establishes items such as:

  • Wages
  • Holidays
  • Working conditions
  • Conditions for leave with and without pay
  • Medical and other benefits

It is a legally binding agreement that establishes how you, your union and your employer interact. It sets out processes for dealing with work-related issues in a fair manner for everyone.

The moment you started working, you automatically benefited from your collective agreement. However, by signing your membership card, you also are able to enjoy even more benefits.

Scholarships

Each year, UCTE offers several scholarships.

Some are for members only while others are for the dependent children of members.

  • 2 post-secondary scholarships – for the children or grandchildren of UCTE members in good standing who are entering their first year of post-secondary education. One of the scholarships is based solely upon academic achievement while the other is based on financial need.
  • Christine Collins Memorial Scholarship – for those members who intend to promote women’s activities, rights and leadership within the union movement.
  • Gary Farrell memorial scholarship – for those members who wish to attend training in the area of health and safety, workers’ compensation, duty to accommodate, labour relations, social justice, or social science.
