November 20 is the Trans Day of Remembrance. Today we commemorate and mourn transgender, two-spirit and non-binary people who have lost their lives to transphobia and hate crimes. It’s also an occasion to reflect on the strength and resilience of the trans community.
Activist Gwendolyn Ann Smith established the day as a vigil in 1999 to honour Rita Hester, who was murdered at her home in Boston. She was a performer who was seen as a rising star by loved ones and by other artists.
There are vigils in communities across the country. Égale Canada recommends ways to commemorate the day with action. Please show solidarity and support local trans and queer struggles. Trans and cis workers, all working together, can end violence against trans people.
