Each year Canada mourns and remembers the misogyny-driven murders of 14 women at Polytechnique Montreal on December 6, 1989. We remember them by holding vigils and saying their names. They are:
- Geneviève Bergeron
- Hélène Colgan
- Nathalie Croteau
- Barbara Daigneault
- Anne-Marie Edward
- Maud Haviernick
- Maryse Laganière
- Maryse Leclair
- Anne-Marie Lemay
- Sonia Pelletier
- Michèle Richard
- Annie St-Arneault
- Annie Turcotte
- Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz.
Look for a vigil in your community. In addition to remembrance, these vigils show our commitment to working together as a society to end gender-based violence.
There are more ways to get involved at this link.
If you and/or people you care about are facing gender-based violence, there are resources and supports.
Some UCTE members face gender-based harassment and violence in the workplace. The union plays a part in pursuing redress for our members who experience violence. It’s also important to lend our voice to efforts to stop gender-based violence at a systemic level.
We urge members to mourn, remember, and take action.
