There is a lot to give us pause on this International Day of Peace. The world seems to be tilting toward a more dangerous and militarized environment. In the orbit of the current U.S. administration[MT1] there are even signs of new potential arms races as Readiness 2030 and new NATO military spending targets escalate.
Meanwhile, activists work for peace, but the western world’s peace movement needs revitalization to oppose these new threats. Fortunately, some venerable peace organizations are still operating and could use our support. Canadian Voice of Women for Peace — has been active since 1960, and the Canadian Peace Initiative are just two examples.
It is, by and large, everyday people and workers who pay the price for arms proliferation and war. Unions around the world support efforts to mitigate its effects and to promote justice and peace.
