On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities we spotlight the Fund the Benefit campaign. Persons with Access needs are disproportionately likely to face poverty and food insecurity. The campaign aims to financially support Canadians with disabilities.
Years of activism by Access advocates and unions finally established the Canadian Disability Benefit (CDB). The federal government announced the CDB in 2020, passed it into law in 2023 and finally opened applications in 2025. Now that the benefit is available, the movement’s attention turns to making it adequate and accessible. Currently it provides a maximum of $200 per month per person.
If you are between 18 and 64 years old and living with a disability, check your eligibility and apply for the benefit if you can.
You can support Access advocates in their work to improve the Canadian Disability benefit by writing your political representatives here. It only takes a minute or two.
Canadians needing Access have waited too long.
