The Union of Canadian Transportation Employees (UCTE), representing workers at airports across the country, is expressing concern following recent federal announcements regarding potential airport privatization. UCTE represents thousands of technical, administrative, and operational personnel working in Canada’s aviation sector, including civil aviation inspectors and airport rescue and firefighting services. In response to the government’s proposal, UCTE has written to Transport Minister Steve MacKinnon with a request to meet to discuss the potential implications for workers, communities, and the travelling public.
“We are concerned about the government’s announcement in the Spring Economic Update that says they will explore ‘alternative models of ownership for Canadian airports,’” said UCTE National President Teresa Eschuk. “We understand the Minister is meeting with airport operators and other people and we hope he will meet with us as the representative of some of the workers who may be directly affected by this decision.”
UCTE’s concerns focus on the potential impacts of privatization on public safety, community accountability, and the long-term sustainability of Canada’s airport system.
“In our view,” said Eschuk, “the current model of local airport authorities is effective and serves the interests of travellers, workers, and communities. Revenues generated by airports must be re-invested in the airport and local community. This model ensures that the safety and security of the Canadian public is the number one priority of our airports, rather than the pursuit of profit for private investors.”
