As indicated in federal budget 2025, the Aircraft Services Directorate (ASD) of Transport Canada is to be transferred to the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) but to date neither the workers nor the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees (UCTE) has been informed of how this will affect the members or when this will happen.
Transport Canada has maintained a veil of secrecy regarding this move leaving us to find out information from the media. UCTE has learned that the Canadian Coast Guard will assume full operation of this group. ASD has been underfunded for many years by Transport Canada, so UCTE welcomes this news and will work to ensure that members’ jobs and benefits will be protected.
“Here is another change in organizational structure that we’ve learned about through the media instead of being informed through proper channels,” says UCTE National President Teresa Eschuk. “They claim to care about their employees’ mental health but actions speak louder than words – do they really care? Transport Canada needs to do better.” Handling it under a shroud of secrecy creates needless stress and potentially impacts our members’ mental health.”
“We’re very disappointed that Transport Canada has neglected to inform us even though we have reached out to them numerous times requesting the information that we need to support our members,” added National Vice-President Mike Tennant. “We are actively trying to obtain more information from Transport Canada.”
