In the Spring Economic Update on April 28, the Government of Canada says they will explore “alternative models of ownership for Canadian airports.” They intend to change the ownership structure of Canada’s airports in order to attract private investors.
UCTE is opposed to the further privatization of airports and other public assets. The current model of local airport authorities works well for travelers, our members and the communities. All revenues currently generated by the airport must be re-invested in the airport and local community. This is a model that works well for everybody and ensures that the safety and security of the Canadian public is the number one priority of our airports, rather than returning profits to private investors.
The government plans to introduce legislation later this year to enable these changes. UCTE will monitor this legislation and will bring forward the interests of UCTE members in all appropriate forums.
