UCTE represents workers on the Trent-Severn Waterway, operated by Parks Canada. UCTE Local 00056 includes carpenters, metalworkers, hydraulic engineers, lock operators, lockmasters, summer students, and more.
The 60 lockstations along the 386 km of the waterway are operated using technology from the nineteenth century up to modern day electronics. Our members are part of its living heritage.
These public service workers are proud of their one-of-a-kind skills and know-how, and they are committed to protecting their communities. About 1.5 million tourists and at least 1 million residents depend on the waterway for the local economy, for flood safety, and even for some of Ontario’s electric power generation. It’s an inspiring and beautiful workplace—or as Luke puts it, “just the best.”
