For many years now, the federal government has observed National Public Service Week, when the employer expresses appreciation for the work of the public service. Our members are proud to serve the public, this week and every week.
But actions say more than words. Think of the still-unresolved Phoenix fiasco, cuts and talk of “capping” the public service, and there is a growing sense that public service workers are expected to pay the price for the new government’s spending priorities.
No surprise, then, that members feel conflicted.
UCTE represents federal public service employees working in administrative services, technicians, inspectors and investigators, and the non-officer complement at the Canadian Coast Guard.
It is perfectly reasonable to be proud of your work and to be acknowledged, while also worried about the impacts of public-service cuts on you, your family, and co-workers. Many members feel an impulse to resist, rather than embrace, National Public Service Week events sponsored by management.
Find out whether your local is organizing events this week and participate. Take this as an opportunity to build solidarity.
Bargaining is also set to begin for Treasury Board units this month, and solidarity will be as important as ever. The value of the services we provide is the basis of our collective strength.
