This morning the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced that as part of their new defence and security strategy that the Canadian Coast Guard would be transferred to the authority of the Department of National Defence.
This decision came as a surprise to the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees and there was no advance notification and no consultation with union representatives at any level prior to this announcement.
UCTE is in active discussions and dialogue with senior management at the Coast Guard about the impact of this decision on UCTE members.
While we are disappointed with the lack of transparency and consultation from the PMO, we hope that this change will bring better job protection for UCTE members and enhanced safety and security to the Canadian public, especially in the crucial role of Search and Rescue.
The Union of Canadian Transportation Employees will continue to be actively engaged on this issue and we will be fighting to ensure that the interests of CCG members are protected during this process.
