May 4 will be International Firefighters’ Day. UCTE wanted to start a little bit earlier this year than planned by celebrating our firefighters at Vancouver Airport. On April 13, good news was announced by Local 20221 at Vancouver Airport. After lengthy discussions with the new management group a memorandum of understanding has been agreed to that recognizes our members who respond to fire and other emergencies at YVR as Fire and Rescue. This group formerly known as Airport Operations Emergency Response Specialists (AOERS) will now be classified as Firefighters and this includes the positions of Captains and Lieutenants as well. They have also agreed to pilot a new 24hr work schedule much the same as most municipal fire fighters have. Local President Devin Glass, UCTE Pacific Regional Vice President Barry Tchir are very excited about this progress for our members. Solidarity!
